Dunn revels in wild phrases and embodied descriptions of what it means to live and move in a body that is othered by society. The story of the Binewskis and their self-created (if you read the book you’ll see what I mean) “freak show” is now one of my favorite works of science fiction.

When I started writing a series of short stories set in the world of a steampunk circus, Victoria relented and told me to read Geek Love, she was sure that I would love it. She’d give me something to read in our conferences together and I’d come back with a triumphant, “This is totally speculative fiction, how did you not realize this?” It was a classic case of an Aries temper meeting the infamous stubbornness of a Taurus. What Victoria didn’t know at the time was that almost all of her favorite books were speculative and I made a game out of pointing that fact out. She had inherited a few unfortunate stereotypes about genre fiction that are pretty ubiquitous in academia. The two of us started out in pretty constant conflict. My don-Victoria-is a very “literary” writer. I started my college career as a creative writing major with some very strong opinions about the kind of fiction that I wanted to write. I read Geek Love in my freshman year of college on the recommendation of my “don” (this is what we call our academic advisors at my college.) It was a turning point in our relationship. TO PURCHASE: Each book cover links to the book’s page on our website! I hope that there is a recommendation here-in these collections of memories and moments of my education- for everyone! Each book I write about in this post brings me back to a very specific time from as far as half my lifetime ago to as little as three weeks earlier than today. Valente will always take me back to age eleven, curled up by a window in a castle-turned-bed-and-breakfast. The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of her own Making by Catherynne M. For instance, Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier will always be a February walking beside the River Avon in Bath, England.

Reading to me is a full body experience and what sticks with me after the book ends is not only what it was about and how it made me feel but where and who I was when I was reading. This blog post will (hopefully) read as an aesthetic, environmental, and gestural recollection of the books that defined my time in school. I’ve decided to go chronologically from my elementary school days all the way through my senior year of college. These conversations have got me thinking about what books I’ve found joy or meaning in during my education. So often, I hear people in the store talking about books that they hated reading in school, books that they never would have chosen for themselves. In honor of my impending graduation from college, I thought it was only fitting that I reminisce on the readings I actually enjoyed in school.
